Eighteen photographic prints form a composite gallery of black and white portraits. Based on August Sander's photographic survey of German society between 1910 and 1950, these works are, in the artist's words, "ghosts of ghosts", another way of naming Jean Baudrillard's "simulacra".
Sherrie Levine, a key figure in the Pictures Generation, is part of the appropriationist movement. For them, copying, as an act and a result, must be understood as an artistic gesture. The American artist’s work refers to the question Walter Benjamin asked in his essay The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction: Does a work lose its aura once it is reproduced? Levine challenges the canonical principle of the art work’s integrity by making reproduction a creative act.
Her work was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection in 2014 at the "Art Lovers" exhibition at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco.
