Immersed in darkness, Resurrect the Oracle has a double religious meaning. It refers to a message from a deity to a believer. The individual tries to involve us with a knowing glance. Taking the viewer as a witness, this admonishing figure may provide the link between him and the deity.
This painting features the narrative dimension so prominent in Lynette Yiadom-Boakye's work and puts black figures into the context of Old Masters. The man is immersed in a darkness that could make him disappear, but his powerful gaze and expression assert his existence.
This painting, which is in the Pinault Collection, was first displayed during the "Debout !" ("Stand Up") show at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes.
