At the invitation of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Grimaldi Forum Monaco hosted the Pinault Collection for the first time from 12 July to 7 September 2014 during the show "Art Lovers: Stories of Art in the Pinault Collection". Palazzo Grassi-Punta della Dogana director Martin Bethenod curated the show, which focused on the memory of art works because, as François Pinault says, "contemporary artists may often break with the past, but they seldom forget it.”

The title, "Art Lovers", evokes not only a collector's encounter with artists, but also those artists’ affinities with art history and their peers. The show’s 50 or so works, some of which had never been seen by the public before, covered every form of artistic homage, from quotation to allusion, reference, parody, subversion and remakes. The rich selection reflected the diversity of media, the generations of artists from Dan Flavin to Bertrand Lavier, Chen Zhen, Marlene Dumas, Takashi Murakami and Urs Fischer and the places they are from, attesting to the Pinault Collection’s openness and commitment. The show highlighted relationships between the works, the contemporary artists and their forerunners. Although designed as a series of isolated, stand-alone entities, it endlessly demonstrated an attachment to the art of past and present.

Meanwhile, in parallel with the "Art Lovers" show at the Grimaldi Forum, the Prince's Palace in Monaco opened its doors to contemporary art for the first time in its history by hosting three works from the Pinault Collection by Thomas Schütte, Subodh Gupta and Urs Fischer.
